Common Myths


Myth - Individuals with disabilities do not want to work. of Disease

Myth Busted - While there is a low reported employment percentage among people with disabilities, those employed are often very capable and skilled. Many individuals with disabilities desire personal and financial independence. |n fact, multiple research studies have shown that employees with disabilities have, on average, had better attendance rates than their non-disabled counterparts.

Myth - Providing accommodations to workers is expensive and hard to implement.

Myth Busted - According to a 2023 report from the Job Accommodation Network, nearly half of the workplace accommodations made for disabled employees can be implemented at no cost to the employer. The median expenditure for accommodations that incur a one-time cost is $300. (Many employees already have the assistive technology that they need to fulfill the skills of a position.)

Myth - Individuals with disabilities are not beneficial to my workplace.
Myth Busted - According to the US Department of Labor, employers who implement a talent strategy of embracing workers with disabilities saw a 90% increase in retaining valued employees, a 72% increase in employee productivity, and a 45% increase in workplace safety.

Myth - Individuals with disabilities are not able to meet performance standards, therefore making them a poor employment risk.
Myth Busted - Dupont conducted a study in 1990 and found that 90% of employees with disabilities rated average or better in job performance compared to 95% of non-disabled employees.

Myth - Workers with disabilities need constant support.
Myth Busted - Individuals with disabilities can work independently with the correct support and adjustments. Innovations in assistive technologies have greatly enhanced the support available.

Myth - It isn't safe to have employees with disabilities in my workplace.
Myth Busted - According to the Job Accommodation Network (JAN) study released in 2023, company safety increased by 31%.

Myth - Disabled individuals don’t have transportation to and from work.
Myth Busted - Government services exist to assist disabled workers overcome transportation barriers. Companies like MY PATH, LLC, work with clients and government agencies to make sure that transportation is not a barrier to working. Just like any other worker, an individual with a disability is responsible for ensuring their own transportation to and from work.
